The earliest known inhabitants of Limbe were the Bantu people, who settled in the area around the 5th century AD. These people were largely nomadic, and they lived off of hunting, fishing, and gathering. They also practiced agriculture, and their culture was heavily influenced by the religions of the region, including Islam and Christianity.

In the 15th century, the Portuguese arrived in the area and began to establish trading posts. They were followed by the Dutch and the British, who both had an interest in the area due to its strategic location for trade. The British eventually took control of the region in 1884, and it became part of the British colony of Nigeria.

The city of Limbe was founded in 1858 by German missionaries, who were looking to spread Christianity in the region. The city was initially known as Victoria, but was later renamed Limbe in honor of the Liberian explorer, Mary Slessor.

The city quickly grew in importance as a port and trade center, and it was the site of a major battle during World War I. It was also a major hub for the slave trade during the 19th century, with many African slaves being transported through Limbe to Europe and the Americas.

During the colonial period, Limbe was the site of a number of educational institutions, including the prestigious Victoria College. The college was founded in 1876 and was the first higher education institution in the region. It was also the first school to accept both male and female students.

In 1960, Limbe became part of the newly independent Republic of Cameroon. Since then, it has continued to grow and develop, becoming one of the most important cities in the country. Today, Limbe is a bustling port city, with a rich cultural heritage and a thriving economy.
